We asked at the counter what they recommended and were served up the A.C. Tucked on a street corner in an otherwise unassuming part of town, Handsome Biscuit opens for breakfast and lunch (except Fridays and Saturdays when they keep serving ‘til 9 p.m.). I had neither issues with the biscuits here. Normally, I’m not much of a biscuit fan – they’re just too dense and heavy to hold much appeal. Whether you’re visiting Norfolk for a vacation or just passing through, there are several family-friendly restaurants that are worth a detour. While you can catch the occasional chain, more often street corners are home to mom and pop diners, chef-driven hotspots, and unique food finds from Turkish to Creole, Jamaican to European. to the north, Virginia Beach to the east, and touching the James and Elizabeth Rivers, the Chesapeake Bay, and the Atlantic Ocean, Norfolk draws visitors and residents from around the country – and the world. I could easily make a Handsome Biscuit Bucket List and enjoy satisfying my taste buds with each and every one of their intriguing biscuit concoctions.A gateway to Washington D.C. You can bet that when I am back in Norfolk for any reason, I’ll be heading here again. Long shreds of pieces piled upon the biscuit with a fried egg and that special Lupo sauce made this a healthier Handsome Biscuit indulgence. When trying to cut the biscuit in half to share, I couldn’t get the steak knife to tear the seared greens easily. The Hot Betty, probably would have best been eaten the moment it was served, due to the fried egg. My husband enjoyed this one far more than the A.C. The Stevie could have been a five star winner if only the chicken had an overhaul in the coating recipe perhaps, adding some simple basic spices or even salt and black pepper. The mustard was spot on, however, it could not mask the bland, somewhat greasy taste of the lifeless chicken. Unseen, the honey on the bottom half of the biscuit, was key in giving this creation some zip. It looked perfectly delicious with a generous amount of whole grain mustard oozing down the sides of a hunk of golden brown fried chicken piece that was speckled with sliced dill pickles. This, no doubt, was a winner for me! The Stevie, though not bad, wasn’t as great. The Lupo hot sauce finished it off packing a little punch of heat. The portion of the bbq could easily have filled another biscuit or two. The pork was spilling out of the soft biscuit.

The thickly chopped slaw, with sliced apple sticks really wowed this sandwich. Slawter, and I am not even a pork or bbq fan. We did a minimal nuke and chowed down, sharing our thoughts. Surprisingly, they were still somewhat warm when we got home. They were ready in no time and we snapped some pictures of them before we headed out for a two hour drive home hoping they’d hold up well.

While they were being prepared, we decided to add the Hot Betty. The guy behind the counter said they really needed to remove that from their online menu, because people, like me, come in prepared to order for others only to find it isn’t an option. I was craving something with a bit of sweetness and I just knew this was going to be what I was looking for. Oh no! My heart sank a little bit more, when I was told that they no longer make the Boom Chick (chicken salad, pecans and mixed berry compote). I whipped out my printed off menu and rattled off our biscuit selections. I asked if there were any specials that day and was slightly disappointed that there were none. Perhaps it was the 30 mph winds and winter like temperatures that kept everyone else snuggled indoors. Fully expecting to find a line at 830am on a Sunday morning, I was most pleased to find only one other patron inside. Having browsed the menu all week long, teasing co-workers who weren’t making the trip, I knew what my choices would be. I was not leaving Norfolk without my fix, so Sunday morning we fed the finicky ones hotel breakfast food and made our way over to this little joint. We arrived in town on a Saturday afternoon and were eager to get our mouths on some of those tantalizing sounding biscuits, but having two super picky teens with us, the Handsome Biscuit was a no go.
